Homemade Applesauce
Finally gave homemade applesauce a try and now I know it wasn’t apple sauce I didn’t like all these years, it was the over-processed, runny texture of store bought applesauce.
This recipe is simple and easy to change to your personal taste. Plus, it’s a great recipe if you find yourself with an abundance of apples in the house this fall.
Ingredients:
- 4 gala apples
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tbsp. cinnamon
- approximately 2 tbsp. brown sugar
- Dash of nutmeg
Instructions:
1.) First wash, peel, and chop all 4 apples. You don’t have to chop them up too fine since we’ll be mashing them together anyway.
2.) Add the chopped apples to a medium saucepan. Pour the water on top and then add in the cinnamon, brown sugar, and nutmeg.
3.) Cook the apples covered on medium high heat for 15-20 minutes.
4.) Stir occasionally and check along the way to see when the apples are tender and cooked through.
5.) You’ll also want to keep an eye on the liquid cooking out of the apples. To prevent the applesauce from becoming too runny, let the apples cook uncovered for another 5 minutes. This helps the excess liquid cook off.
6.) Once the apples are cooked through, you can use a mashed potato masher to mash up your apples. Just be sure to transfer your hot apples to a glass mixing bowl first if your mashed potato masher is metal and you’re using a non-stick saucepan like I was. Mash the apples until you’re satisfied with the consistency. I left some bigger pieces of apple in mine, but not many.
7.) Then, you’re all set to enjoy your cinnamon-applesauce while it’s still warm, or cool it down and refrigerate it for a delicious snack at a later time.
Hope you give this recipe a try and make it your own!
