Farm Fresh Adventure: An Introduction
I first heard about the Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative last year at work. All I knew at the time was that some co-workers were signing up to receive fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers each week throughout the summer. It seemed like a nice idea, but since I only became aware of it after the season started, I decided to hold off until next year to see what it was all about.
Fast forward to this year, and I’ve signed up for the fruits, herbs, and flower deliveries. There’s so much information to read about on the LFFC (which is why I linked to it above), but the thing I like the most is that I’m doing a small part to support local farmers while also having the opportunity to enjoy organically grown, sustainable produce. And the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), has so many options–you can buy shares for meat, cheese, yogurt, eggs, bread, gluten free bread, fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers, juice, and more!
With so many possibilities and the option to buy large, medium, or small shares, there is something for everyone.
My first delivery was 2 bunches of rhubarb and 2 pints of strawberries. Part of why I signed up for the summer CSA was to experiment with new fruits and herbs that I wouldn’t typically buy. I’m no stranger to strawberries, but rhubarb was definitely something new to my kitchen. I’d only ever had it in jam or yogurt, and certainly never made anything at home with it, so I was excited to get home and try it out.
Oh, the other great part of this program is that the produce is delivered weekly to my work as a drop-off location. I get an email that the delivery has been dropped off and I go over to our break room to pick up my shares–very convenient 🙂
Read on to my next post for the delicious strawberry-rhubarb jam I made all thanks to my first #FarmFresh CSA delivery.
