Reading On-the-Go
One thing I’ve learned about myself the last 2 years is that when your job involves reading and writing full time, it can be really hard to sit down and enjoy reading just for fun. Maybe it’s sitting for 8 hours a day that makes me restless or the constant stream of words in front of me that makes it difficult to come home and want to spend any more time on the computer or sitting down to read a good book. Whatever the reason may be, I knew that I missed reading too much to just abandon curling up with a good book–enter my newfound love of poetry.
Poetry is great for many reasons–it’s open to interpretation and it speaks to each of us differently. It’s inspirational and thought provoking. And yes, it’s often times short and sweet. I’ll be honest that’s what initially drew me to some of the more popular Instagram poets out there. I shared some of them before in a post from last September, and since then, my collection has grown! I bought Love Her Wild by Atticus and The Princess Saves Herself in This One by Amanda Lovelace and I wanted to get all of my poetry books off the shelf to take a closer look at how the collection has changed over the past year.
Thanks to these fun, witty, intense, and memorable poets, I’ve been able to enjoy reading just for fun when I have a few minutes or when I’m too tired to dive into a novel at the end of the workday. I’m still reading novels on the weekends, days off, and vacation, but I’ll admit I was never one to have a “To Be Read” pile because I was always breezing through books. Now, my TBR pile is at least 7 books tall at all times–which is a good thing, but also makes me wish I had more time to read. The characters and stories within each book will just have to patiently wait for the day when I finally have the time to sit down and get lost in another world.
For now, life is busy with all good things and poetry has become the perfect way to keep my love of words part of every day life.
